In the early hours of the eleventh of March, 2022, the students remaining in the Ikole campus hostel of the Federal University of Oye Ekiti noticed a thick fog of smoke coming out of the roof of the second block of the female hostel.
At least two rooms were reported to have been affected. Fortunately and thanks to the ASUU strike, the affected rooms didn’t contain any student and was locked. No casualties were recorded.
The cause of the fire is as of now, not known, but the students report that the fire started when the school’s generator that powers the school hostel came on. Owing to that fact, there are speculations that it must have been an electrical fire.
The thought of the belongings of students that got destroyed in the fire continues to provoke the students but the consolation that nobody was injured or killed in the fire seems to keep them calm.
The Ekiti state government fire department arrived at the scene some moments later. At the time, the students claim to have almost totally put out the fire.
