7 Things Federal University Students Deserve After ASUU Strike

In a recent Interview with the Federal Minister of Labour and Employment in Nigeria (Chris Ngige), the Minister said that the government has plans of paying ASUU and the polytechnic Universities a sum of 34billion naira very soon.

As many of you reading this may know, these series of strikes have had a negative impact on not just the academical lives of the children of Nigeria, but their mental health too.

In respect to that, here are 7 things that we at Trybe City feel the students of the Federal Universities of Nigeria deserve, after this strike ends:

1. PROVISION OF JOBS:

For most jobs here in Nigeria there are age limits, which if your age is exceeding, would automatically disqualify you from the job.

Most of these jobs also include a certain year period of experience, which if you also don’t have automatically disqualifies you from the job application. These consecutive strikes have automatically disqualified Nigerian students from future jobs that they may apply for, so we suggest that graduating students of federal universities be offered jobs in their various schools.

We know that not all of the graduating students could be offered jobs by their schools, and that most Federal Universities already do this , so we are suggesting that the normal criteria for getting jobs in Federal Universities be brought down.

For example, if in a school like UNILAG only “first class students” are offered jobs. The school could also add “second class students” to that exclusive list.

2. HIGHER ALLOCATION OF FUNDS TO EDUCATIONAL SECTOR:

The Federal Minister of Education said in an interview that the allocation towards education from the national budget is below 5%, even with the UN’s suggestion of 26%, this is one of the major reasons why a student of Nigeria can not attend a Federal University without having extra years added to their stipulated years of study.

We ask that the budget allocation to the educational sector of Nigeria be revised, for the betterment of the Children of this Country.

3 TIME:

It is no news that whenever most Federal Universities resume after a strike, the students are rushed straight into exams. We know that the Universities have good reason for doing this, but at the same time we ask that they consider the need for the students to not just study their courses but to also understand, which in most cases they can’t without the help of their lecturers.

4. AN ACTIVE COUNSELLING UNIT IN THE UNIVERSITIES:

It was reported that a student from the University of Jos committed suicide because of the ASUU strike.

This strike has done terrible things to the mental health of the students of this country, and the need for an active counselling unit in the Federal Universities cannot be overemphasized.

We are not just asking for the creation of this unit in the schools, but also for the reviving of them as we know that some schools have inactive counselling units.

5. THE CREATION OF STUDENT UNIONS:

It is important that the students have a say in the running of their schools, this is why a student union in all Federal Universities is needed.

This will help ensure that the needs and interests of the students are really put into consideration before any decision concerning the welfare of the students is made. This could also help in the prevention of the consecutive ASUU strike every academic year.

6. A SKILL ACQUISITION PROGRAM IN THE UNIVERSITIES:

The addition of a “Skill Acquisition Program” to the curriculum of the University Students will help keep them busy in times like these. If the students have a skill they learn while in school, it won’t be hard for them to continue from where they stopped when they aren’t in school and also monetize it for their benefit.

7. A DISCOUNT FOR THE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM FOR THE UNIVERSITIES:

One of the cons of the ASUU strike is that it spoils the plans of the students after school. So many of them who have plans for their Masters degree normally have it derailed by the ASUU strike.

We suggest that the fee for the post graduate program for all Federal Universities be given to the students at a discount. This could help reduce the massive amount of brain drain the country is currently facing.
