As a culturally rich and rooted country, Nigeria has produced many great musicians who have integrated their cultural heritage into their music and therefore earned them a global audience. From classic sounds of high-life to contemporary afrobeat. In this article, however, our main focus is on gospel female musicians. Nigeria’s gospel music has gotten to a stage where it can compete favorably with its counterparts all over the world. By using a blend of Nigerian rhythm and spiritual lyrics, these Nigerian women have been using their talents to spread hope, inspiration, and encouragement to their listeners both at home and abroad. Here are some of the Nigerian female gospel musicians you should listen to, who have been, from times past doing great and are still doing great in the music world.
1.) Tope Alabi
Tope is one of the living legends in gospel music generally. This goes, to say that when we talk about Nigerian gospel musicians, both male, and female, she is one of the best. She is a 52-year-old woman who has written countless gospel songs, composed songs for movies, and even acted in some movies herself. She sings mostly in the Yoruba language and has been featured in many songs by her colleagues. Some of her albums are: ore tio common, owe eri, hallelujah, and many more.
2.) Sola Allyson
She is an Ikorodu-born 51-year-old woman. She started her music career in 2003 when she sang “Eji Owuro” for a movie with the same title. Sola is a folk, soul, and gospel singer and composer. She is also a voice coach to many people, a consultant, and a counselor. Some of her songs are isinmi, obinrin ni mi, and many more.
3.) Mercy Chinwo
Mercy began singing when she was just 8 years old I’m the church’s children’s choir. Recently married to Pastor blessed, she is a gospel singer and songwriter who has written and sang many spirit-filled gospel songs. She won the Nigeria Idol in 2012 but what brought her into the limelight is her soul-filling songs. She sings in Igbo, English, and sometimes Pidgin English. Some of her songs include Obinasom, Chinedum, and Amazing God.
Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu is one of the greatest Nigerian female gospel musicians who has been actively releasing spiritual edifying songs for years. She is a senior worship leader at Loveworld. One of her most popular songs is ‘way maker‘. Not only was the song popular but also received 3 nominations and won the Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards. Other songs by Sinafh are: I know who I am, Final Word, There’s an Overflow and many more.
5.) Victoria Orenze
Victoria Orenze is a revivalist and a preacher of Jesus. She hails from Rivers State, Nigeria. Victoria believes that any medium by which one can share the gospel of Jesus, one should it very well which is why she is determined to continue to share the good news of Jesus through her songs. Some of her songs are Covenant Keeping God, On Fire, Spirit Chants, and so on.
6.) Pat Uwaje King
She is also known as Patricia Uwaje. She started singing when she was 13 years at Christ Winners Church, Lagos. In 1999, she began her professional singing when she did a series of jingles for African Independent Television (AIT). She is a music consultant and also the leader of the Midnight Crew gospel music group. Some of her songs are All Power, Mo Dibo, Extra Praize, etc.
7.) Bola Are
Mama Bola Are as she is popularly referred to is a Nigerian gospel singer and songwriter who has been releasing spirit-filled songs for many years. She was a former President of the Gospel Musicians Association of Nigeria. She is one of the forerunners of Nigerian gospel music. She started singing at the tender age of two and she knew from her early years that she would serve the Lord. Some of her songs include Adura Owuro, Olorun Erujeje, Praises, etc.
8.) Chioma Jesus
Amaka Okwuoha known as Chioma Jesus hails from the Eastern part of Nigeria. She is a prophetic praise singer who gives prophetic words during her ministrations. She is a 50-year-old from Abia state and is very energetic in her live ministrations. Her songs include Ebube Dike Medley, Imela Chineke, Eze Jesus, and so on.
9.) Lara George
She is a Nigerian-American gospel singer. Her 2008 song “Ijoba Orun” from her debut Album ‘Forever in my Heart’ gained her a lot of popularity and recognition. Her songs earned her so many nominations and she won some of them. She was one of the first Nigerian artists to feature on BET International. Some of her songs are Enyin loba, Nobody greater, Total Surrender, etc.
In 2010, Onos whose full name is Onoriode Ebiere Ariyo, released her debut Album Keep Moving, but what really brought her to the limelight was a 2014 album No limits Which includes Alagbara and Everything Has Changed. The success of this album earned her some nominations and awards. Her songs include: keep moving, No limits, etc.
