The Freshman year: 5 things to look forward to as a fresher in OAU

Getting socialized into a place comes with creating unforgettable memories that can sometimes leave you wanting more adventures. This is what Ogba Femi gives with more vibes, energy and good times. With all these experiences, you cannot but agree with me that good memories are one of the yummies served by the greatest of the greatest Obafemi Awolowo University.

1) Struggle on a 100%

Crying

One thing OAU will offer you back-to-back is the stress and struggle. Even the great Ife agreed to it with their full chest including it in the anthem “for learning and culture, sports and struggles“. From the registration hurdles to the school hostels where if you’re not well established can be bounced out from a queue waiting for water from the running tap. This school hostel experience is fun yet the struggle is real. Cause, if you’re not careful enough you can misplace your bucket with just a slack by snoozing. The class palava cannot be overlooked. Imagine preparing for a 7 a.m. class, getting to the venue and eventually realizing the class won’t hold _just dey play😂 is what comes to mind for sure. Even getting a seat in the front row comes with its struggles. Some lecturers even put the students in “solo” mode once course outlines have been given; as per sey you don’t want to jones yourself, you read the rest on your own. The craze point is you doing “A” in class and meeting “Z” in exams😭. The worst form of depression that can befall any man on judgement day (exam day)

2) Chronicles of MOZ 101

It’s a necessary evil most staylites are on the lookout for. In their terms, they refer to it as “catch them young” with Anglomoz being the lecture theatre (it’s linked from Angola and Mozambique halls of residences for male and female freshers respectively). Dandies come out in their numbers to hunt queens with beauty and grace. Although the genesis and exodus of most love stories start with “eye contact” and end with “blocked on WhatsApp”. Nonetheless, this course under any circumstances should not be carried over, especially for the guy man ( course outlines and lectures will be given by already available mentors😉).

Oops😲, I’ve scattered some tables. Code don crack

3) Parry! Parry! Parry!🎉🎉

Ilebaye

You don’t want to miss the exciting goodies that come with partying in OAU. Ogba Femi is regarded as the king of all parties. A non-diluted solution served hot just like “as e dey hot”. Is it the parties fixed by your department or your faculty or the one organized at SU (student union)? Name it, there are no dulling moments in these parties. It is one in which you relish the aura of appearances and figures of students and guest  . It’s a place where you connect even with people you cannot even meet throughout your stay in school. The “Pepper Dem vibe” is always there, a necessity for unforgettable celebrations.

4) Continua Aluta!

There is no Great Ife without Aluta. It’s a core value that signals to anyone who wants to play with her intelligence_”prepare for a mental showdown!”. This great institute is often referred to as the “Jerusalem of Aluta” as her students give what you order in full expression. This to a large extent should be anticipated cause of the feeling of oneness and solidarity it gives. Oh, did you witness Aluta in action during the fee reduction protest? I bet even your digital circuits got a kick out of it! 😉 Aluta! Aluta! Aluta! All the way!

5) Elections and campaigns cannot be overemphasised.

Campus elections make you feel like you’re in the political game of your country. It’s the main spice in the political stew_they just cannot be underseasoned! It’s a time to see whether the fowl’s yansh is yellow or white and that’s what makes it one thing to be anticipated. Ranging from the Department’s elections to that of the faculty, up to the SU’s (student union) election is a political ladder leading to more campaign shenanigans. You don’t want to miss the debates and manifestos, especially at the SU level. It’s a gbasgbos back to back. At this point, the heat is on as candidates are struggling for a seat at the SU. I must say, it’s indeed a worthwhile experience

All of these and more make Obafemi Awolowo University a great place worth visiting. You know the saying that says_”you don’t know how tasty it is until you give it a try” is what sums the experiences up. Yes, the struggle is tiring. But I guess that’s what adds a bit of atare(chilli pepper) to the Odyssey.
