I Lost My School Fees to Sportybet: Here is the Full Gist

As an average Nigerian student, in order to survive, you have to choose from the list of alternative survival skills presented to us by Nigeria’s current situation. The one I adopted is gambling, or “betting,” as it is popularly known.

One prominent betting App in Nigeria is Sportybet, popularly called “Sporty.” It is ranked high because of some of the qualities it possesses compared to others. Sportybet has no physical shop, which means you don’t have to take the risk of reducing your “steez and composure” by queuing for hours or getting noticed by your neighbors or babe, because we are not so proud of our “hustle.” condition bend crayfish.

Talking about the EVIL day I lost my school fees to “Sporty,” it was the beginning of my sophomore year in uni (Part 2), and I was a freshly recruited gambler, or gamer, depending on how you see it. Being a new convert, I didn’t have much idea of how things really worked on the app, but something drew my attention to a particular section where I found a game called “Aviator.” I had heard so much about the game beforehand and was happy I could navigate it, not knowing the danger ahead. Prior to this time, I was told that with Aviator, I could become a millionaire in a minute. But the part Khalid didn’t tell me is that I could lose my life savings in a minute too.

Without hesitation, I funded my Sporty wallet with ₦6000 from the ₦76,000 Tuition Fee sitting in my Access Bank account. Immediately, I pictured myself as an investor, a “low-budget Mr. Sabinus.” I navigated to the Sporty app, and to be sincere, in 3 minutes, I had ₦12,000 in my wallet. At that moment, I saw every unsuccessful gambler as a failure and myself as the latest “Mayor of Ekiti.” I thought within myself, if I could get this with just ₦6000, with ₦76,000, I’m a millionaire. I was overjoyed, and without much consideration, boom!!  I funded the whole tuition fee to Sportybet.

I entered Aviator, and on my first attempt, which I staked with ₦30,000, It was unsuccessful. The Aviator sound, which had been sonorous in my ears a few minutes ago, eventually became noise. I was panting… Omo, na so you dey do for here?! This time, I couldn’t head back because half of my tuition fee was gone. It was now a “do or die” situation. I was praying to God for a last chance, but it looked like Sportybet “no gree for anybody” including God to work His miracle.

I gave it another try, and on the second attempt, which I staked ₦45,000, It was also unsuccessful. I knew it was over. I wrote an email to Sportybet asking for a refund, saying I was sorry and lied that I was under 18, but it seemed “the scope don cast.” I withdrew the ₦5000 I had left and used it as transport fare back to the village, to inform my “village people” of their success. That was the end of my journey with gambling.

Conclusion

I later concluded that even to gamble, you have to be rich. Gambling with hard-earned money or a fund set aside for a particular purpose can be disastrous.
